What Is Earth Connection?

In traditional astrology, the Earth and the natural world below the heavens fall into a domain known as the "sub-lunar sphere." This puts all of Earth's earthly biology, land, and water domains under the Moon and this is also true archetypically. Many spiritual traditions teach that wisdom can be found through attentive observation of the natural world. Whether you view nature as spiritually alive, symbolically meaningful or simply worthy of reverence, spending time in relationship with the land can deepen awareness, intuition and presence.

This page is not about finding one correct interpretation for every bird, flower or cloud. Instead, it is an invitation to slow down, pay attention and develop a relationship with the world around you.

Observation Before Interpretation

One of the most valuable practices in animism, symbolism and nature connection is learning to observe before assigning meaning. The best way to practice this is to ask:

• What is this creature, plant or phenomena?
• If you have a picture or can remember what it looks like, can you identify the species or type using an app or search engine?
• What did the interaction make you feel?
• Was the encounter notable or timely in some way?
• What information can you find about it's folklore (locally first if possible), mythology or symbolism?

Online interpretations are a starting point only. Remember that there are billions of different types of birds and have a specific relationship to the land and other animals.

Signs, Omens & Synchronicity

Many people experience meaningful coincidences, repeated encounters with animals or recurring symbols. These experiences can be explored through reflection, journaling and observation. It is very important to be grounded about these interactions. For instance, a vulture can be symbolic of purification as it neutralizes decaying matter through it's body. It is not always a death omen and perhaps when it is, it's symbolic of what we need to let go of. There is a way to look at every omen as of benefit to the observer rather than of fear or loss.

Discernment is important. Not every animal is a message and not every coincidence carries a hidden meaning. Sometimes the greatest lesson is simply becoming more attentive to the world around us.

The Spirit of the Locale

Where you live may seem mundane or unimportant and it is anything but that! There is a whole history and potential folklore or spiritual essence of your space. Nature shares this space with you. Some research questions that may get you started with connecting to the energy of the land are:

• What happened in this area in the last 100-500 years?
• What are the prominent people groups, myths and legends of that timeframe? How can I honor that without appropriation?
• There are species that evolved with this area for billions of years, what are they and what role do they play in this area?
• Besides just grass, what other plants are around? Are they from here or somewhere else?
• How can I become part of this local ecosystem? What is my place in it?
• In what ways am I cultivating this land and is it beneficial or destructive?
• What are the intuitive feelings I sense from the land itself?

All of these thoughts are literal interactions with the land. Seeking what it truly is instead of seeing it as bland. It is alive. It's not ethereal, but it is spiritually entriching and healing to get in touch with.

Practices for Earth Connection

• Nature Journaling — Recording observations, weather, moon phases and seasonal changes. Also writing creatively about or sketching nature
• Sit Spot Practice — Returning regularly to the same outdoor location to observe subtle shifts.
• Plant Meditation — Sitting with a plant in order to allow it to ground you or share it's lessons.
• Walking Meditation — Moving slowly through nature with awareness and seeking out it's lessons or messages.
• Land Remediation — Participating directly in cycles of growth, death and renewal by planting beneficial plants or removing invasive species.
• Lunar Observation — Tracking lunar phases and their influence on the natural world.
• Seasonal Living — Aligning activities with the changing rhythms of the year.

Correspondences

Correspondences are symbolic relationships between natural objects, archetypes and spiritual concepts. Different traditions use correspondences in different ways and there is rarely a single universal system. Some correspondences are personal as well. A practical application of correspondences would be for creating a spell or to bring about an intention. Below is the natural flow of finding corresponding energies:

• What is the name and etymology of the subject?
• Where is their archetype or quality in other parts of nature? (example: birds as messengers, associated to throat chakra)
• What are their colors or numerological/elemental associations?
• Which planetary energies most closely represent their behavior in nature and with humans?
• What are their myths, legends, stories and historical legacy?
• What reality do they bring to light?

Correspondences can be useful tools for contemplation, meditation, and ritual. However, many traditional systems were developed within a European cultural context and reflect the knowledge and assumptions of their time. Consider these associations as starting points rather than fixed truths, and supplement them with direct observation, ecological understanding and perspectives from other traditions. Also consider that humans are not the only species, ingestion or impacts on the human body should not be the only guide to how the subject behaves archetypically.
